Before signing his best friend’s (Sesto) death warrant for treason against him, the Roman emperor, Tito, desperately questions him in order to find any reason to pardon his best friend. Sesto will not tell him the name of his accomplice, Vitellia because Tito has agreed to marry her

In this song, Sesto reminds Tito of their love for each other, and feels tortured that he betrayed Tito.
