What to Say to Recruiters | How to Reach out to Recruiters
Today we’re discussing how to reach out to recruiters and what to say. If you want a great internship or job, it’s worth it to meet recruiters at your dream companies in order to land those positions. I will also address how to conquer that fear everyone has when reaching out to recruiters.

Recruiters are sort of the gateway to your career. You want to start building name recognition with them so when a position is available they think of you.

Introduce yourself. Whether in person or online, if you get the chance, introduce yourself to the recruiter. If in person, say your name, why you’re interested in the company and what you’re looking to do.
If you can only find them online-reach out and give a quick intro over LInkedIn. Same rules apply. Make it a quick note in the connection request.

Follow up. If you met in person, email them or message on linkedin and thank them for coming to wherever you met them at-info session, career fair, conference, etc. It’s a great way to make another touch point so they remember your name.

Let them know when you get a new skill.
University Recruiters like when you check in every couple of months. Or if you possibly interviewed at a company but weren’t a right fit at the time, check in. Let recruiters know what new skills you’ve acquired in the last few months.
It could be as simple as “Hey, I know last time we talked you mentioned even publicists need some basic Photoshop skills. Just wanted to let you know I just finished a Photoshop course and can now add that skill to my resume.”
That’s it. Once again, sending a short and sweet message here and there, make you one of those people they think of when a job comes up.

And the last time to check in is when you apply. If you’ve talked to a recruiter here and there-met at an event, emailed for some of what we’ve talked about already-do not neglect emailing or LI messaging when you apply. 2 Quick sentences-Hi, wanted to let you know I applied for the Publicity Assistant position. I’m excited for this opportunity.”

So simple, but can make them take the time and find your application to give it a review.

OKay, so now for that fear I hear all the time---But what if I offend them and they don’t write back?
So here’s the deal. Those two things aren’t exclusive.
They might not write back. They’re busy. BUT
Doesn’t mean you offended them.

And then for the offending. Talk about when I was in college. Meeting new potential candidates is a big part of a recruiters job. As long as your message is polite, you are not offending anyone. So, proofread your email, read it outloud, does it sound polite. Make sure it’s quick and to the point. Did all that? Good. It’s not offensive, so just press send. What is offensive is checking in too often, so I suggest only doing these things every couple months.

So, to recap:
Introduce yourself
Follow up and say thanks if you met in person
Let them know when you learned a new skill.
