Thyagaraja is the musical legend for the Telugu Devotional Songs musical genre. According to the history Thyagaraja’s prosperous grandfather, who was the great poet and scholar, dumped his native hometown and moved to Thanjavur and then to Tiruvarur where the royal patronage was extended to all literary scholars and artists of repute. Thyagaraja became so famous that over the years, several accounts of his personality, life, and works have been produced. Every year, according to the thidhi of Thyagaraja’s death anniversary, there is weeklong festival, when musicians pay their homage to the Saint by singing his compositions. On the Aradhana Day the “Pancharatna kritis” are rendered in accord by all the artistes, in the ragas “Nattai, Gowlai, Arabhi, Varali and Sri”. All the five are Ghana ragas. Tyagaraja had followed this during his lifetime.
This album “Thyagaraja Aradhana or Tyagaraja Keerthanalu” is the homage to the legend. The renditions of these songs are flawless and beautiful. Especially songs like “Bala Kanaka Maya” deserve a special mention.
