Vermi Compositing- Everyday Science

Vermi Compositing

The process of converting biodegradable wastes such as vegetable peels, leaves and flowers into manure by burying them in compost pits is called composting.

These wastes are decomposed by the action of bacteria and fungi. It is a slow, simple and cheap process without causing harm to the environment.

One such method of composting is vermicomposting.

Vermicomposting involves degradation of organic matter into fertile manure by using special type of earthworms called as red worms. The nutrient rich manure is called as vermicompost.

Method of Vermicompositing

• First prepare a pit 2-3 feet deep in your garden area.

• Vegetable waste, fruit waste, waste paper, left over foods is spread over the pit.
Cover it with a thin layer of soil.
• Water is sprinkled to create moisture .

Spread re worms over the pit and cover it again with thin layer of soil.

• Again water is sprinkled to keep it moist .

Cover the pit with leaves to prevent evaporation.

• A vermicomposting pit takes nearly two to four weeks to completely convert waste into manure. It is decomposed into blackish brown material.

The vermicompost can be excavated from the pit and is ready to be used as manure.
