Terminator 2D: No Fate Was Worth the Wait (Review)

Have you ever wished you could go back in time and play a licensed Terminator 2 game from the 90s? Well, now you can. Bitmap Bureau didn’t invent time travel but they might as well have with their sidescrolling action game Terminator 2D: No Fate. It’s a bit awesome and a bit of a pain in the ass in equal measure, just like the arcade games it emulates.
You’ll first get to play as Sarah Conner, who’s all about infiltrating Cyberdyne the hard way or stealth sections where you hide from cameras and orderlies and even the dreaded T1000. John’s sections are all action as you throw grenades, and find increasing more powerful weapons to take down huge bosses. We get precious little time with the T800 but it’s hard to complain too much because the vibrant action accompanied by incredible effects and music is such a breathless joy no matter who you’re playing as. Factor in all the easter eggs and how the story branches off into two alternate timelines that are available as you replay the game and you’ve got a short campaign that can net you hours and hours of fun.
But getting there is the tricky part. No Fate’s sometimes barmy controls and supremely punishing difficulty can be rather frustrating. No Fate loves going from autopilot easy to killing you out of nowhere, the slightest mistake eating up your limited supply of continues. And once you’re out of those, it’s game over and you have to restart from the beginning. It’s quite a hurdle but don’t feel ashamed having to play the game with unlimited retries like I did on the easiest difficulty, because no matter how much pain you choose to endure, if you do, you’ll get to enjoy one of the most full chested celebrations of the Terminator franchise you’ve ever played so go check out Terminator 2D: No Fate!
