"Did the doctor tell you about the risks of surgery?"
"I don't know."

"Did the doctor tell you about the benefits of surgery?"
"I don't know."

"Did your doctor tell you about any alternatives to this surgical procedure?"
"I don't know," you reply.

If you were a juror listening to a witness answer this way, would you think the witness was lying?

Would you think the witness was telling the truth?
Would you think the witness simply forgot?

The problem is that if you don't know the answer, that locks you into your answer.
