Providence & Worcester: CT-1 Working Around Middletown, CT

The Providence and Worcester Railroad (owned by Geneese and Wyoming Corp) is a class II railway company that operates many short railroad-lines in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York. They primarily work with class I railroads such as CSX, to serve many local branches that have customers not served by class I railroads. PW (Providence and Worcester) owns and operates the Middletown Branch, also commonly called the "Air Line", which runs from Cedar Hill Yard in North Haven, CT (on Amtrak's Springfield Line) to downtown Middletown, CT with a 1-mile long branch extending to Portland, CT across the Connecticut River. The Middletown Branch also meets the Valley Line (Old Saybrook-Hartford) in Middletown too. Index with info about each clip is right below.

0:00 - CT-1 crosses Portland Avenue grade crossing in downtown Middletown while switching its consist up. GE B39-8E #3901 leads while EMD GP38 #2011 trails on the rear. (This clip was recorded on an earlier date, than the others.)

0:45 - GE B40-8W #4007 crawls past Forest Street in Middletown, with train CT-1. On the rear is GE B39-8E #3903. The consist is normally a lot shorter than it is in this video, which hinted to me that he might have more customers than he usually does.

3:17 - As I was heading to downtown Middletown (about 4 miles away from where the previous clip was taken), I noticed the Connecticut River Swing Bridge was closed, which meant that there were deliveries in Portland; the town across the river from Middletown. I headed over to the yard in Portland and waited, but I didn't see anything crossing the bridge from where I was standing from. Thinking I was wrong about the deliveries in Portland, I headed back to Middletown yard expecting to see him switching cars down there. At first it appeared that CT-1 was idling in the yard for the time being. I was getting tired of waiting, and decided to call it a day, but as soon as I was about to leave, I heard 3 short horn blasts (the horn sequence when a train reverses direction), coming from across the river. While I was managing to look through the trees, I saw CT-1 was in fact actually starting to cross the bridge. As soon as I realized this I raced down to Harbor Park to catch the clip you're watching at this moment in the video.

3:48 - Right before the previous clip ends I noticed he started to pick up speed across the bridge. I wanted to get video of him switching in Portland, so I knew I had to end the video and race back across the river to the yard where he would be switching. I decided to head to Airline Avenue grade crossing, thinking he might be passing it, because as you'll see in the video the crossing had activated just as I got there. After a few minutes however, I realized the activation was erroneous, and I headed down the street to see him switching at the logging company's yard.

4:01 - CT-1 pulls forward to flip the switch to reverse into the logging company's side track. Unfortunately because of time, I couldn't stay any longer, as I had to leave in about an hour. I was still nonetheless very satisfied, as I there are few if any videos of CT-1 in Portland, and I've had a personal goal of trying to catch him running there when he (rarely) does.
