Blind Color Test: Horse Matches Written Words to Colors

In this video, the horse performs a blind color-matching test.

In the first part, I show the horse a card with a written color word: Yellow, Green, Red, or Blue. I do not know which word is on the front side of the card when I show it. The horse then goes to the stand and chooses the matching color card.

In the second part, the task is reversed: I show a color card, and the horse has to choose the written word on the stand.

The cards are shuffled regularly. If I lose count, see the front side of a card, or become unsure about the orientation of a written word, I stop and shuffle the cards again.

There were several distractions during the test: a passing car, many biting insects, and grass near the cards. At some moments I tap the horse with my palm only to kill insects on his body — this is not punishment or pressure.

One short fragment was cut out because it contained only several minutes of insect control and no experimental trials.

Result: in the word-to-color part, the horse made one clear mistake. In the reversed color-to-word part, the horse clearly approached the correct “Red” card, but was distracted at the last moment and did not fully touch it.
