Can You Still Trust WhatsApp in 2026?

In 2026, trust in WhatsApp is facing its biggest test ever as two parallel crises challenge Meta’s privacy claims: India’s Supreme Court has accused the platform’s 2021 policy of being a “decent way of committing theft” of user data and threatened to halt all data sharing unless Meta swears that not a single digit flows to Facebook or Instagram, while a U.S. class-action lawsuit alleges an internal “Task” system can bypass end-to-end encryption despite Meta’s denial. The core issue isn’t just message content, which remains largely encrypted, but the massive harvesting of metadata that links WhatsApp behavior to Meta’s advertising empire, especially through business chats and AI features. Meta argues this is lawful, anonymized, and industry standard; critics say consent is coerced and privacy is an illusion. For ordinary personal chats WhatsApp is still reasonably safe, but for business interactions, sensitive secrets, or anything that feeds Meta’s profiling machine, trust is increasingly conditional and alternatives like Signal remain the gold standard for true privacy.
