Gloucester Cathedral Visit

As per the title, a visit to Gloucester Cathedral. If you have never seen it it is magnificent in its splendour. For years it has been undergoing restoration, as you might expect from a building over a thousand years old, and although the work is ongoing, the western three quarters is done and stands in all its glory bereft of scaffolding. The surrounding courtyard has recently been redeveloped as a public space and now perfectly complements the Cathedral building with an air of quiet calm.
On the inside all religious buildings have an aurora, but few will better this one with its huge columns and fan vaulted ceilings and a sense of vastness as it is difficult to see from one end to the other. Burial place of kings (well one), there are the usual side chapels as you would expect, one of the best east windows in Europe, and so much to catch the eye. The west window is not bad either. The choir stalls are a work of art, a celebration of the skill of the carpenter, but the cloisters take fan vaulting to a new level, the intricacies of which reflect the presence of master masons in every stone. Never the less what you will probably take from the cloisters is the sense of peace which is as intended.
