EPIC Video Orca Attacking Bottlenose Dolphin Off The Coast Of Newport Beach California

On Thursday, January 25th, 2024 the same pod of ~10 Eastern Tropical Killer Whales that's been spotted up and down the coast of So Cal since Dec. 11th was spotted AGAIN by Capt. Larry Hartman aboard the Catallac about 2 miles off the coast of Newport Beach around 11am. Our fleet of whale watching boats at Davey’s Locker watched as the pod successfully hunted and ate a common dolphin AND an inshore Bottlenose Dolphin, launching the Bottlenose into the air several times before eating it! This encounter marks the 17th sighting of this pod in So Cal in the last 45 days, which is a historic RECORD number of sightings for the area, and we're anticipating they will be sticking around!

So, how can you get out and see Killer Whales in Orange County? The first step is to buy a ticket on a 2-hour trip any day of the week and hope to get lucky! Outside of the rare Orcas sightings we've had lately, what's more common this time of year Gray Whales, Humpback Whales, and Dolphin, which we've seen consistently over the past 7 days during our coastal whale watching trips. The second way to see Orca is to DROP EVERYTHING and respond immediately to an 'ORCA ALERT' which is posted on our social media @NewportWhales (Instagram). When you can get out on the water the same day they've been sighted in the area, chances are very high that you will be successful at spotting Orcas in the wild. The third way is to go out on an 8-hour trip with our friends at Newport Coastal Adventure, these 'all day' trips have more time to search for rare sightings like this and increase your odds of finding Orcas. Undoubtedly, the success rate is highest during a same-day response, so watch our social media @NewportWhales on Instagram or @NewportLandingWhaleWatching on Facebook for real-time updates! Good luck whale watchers!
