CMES Explains: New Leadership in Oman

Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman passed away January 10 after a long illness. Qaboos was sultan of the Persian Gulf country since 1970, and leaders around the world paid their respects to the monarch and the kingdom.

CMES Distinguished Fellow Gary Grappo served two assignments in Oman, as deputy chief of mission between 1998 and 2001, and as ambassador 2006 to 2009. During that time Grappo got to know the Sultan not only professionally but personally, and shares his thoughts on the sultan’s legacy both in the region and globally, and provides insight into his new successor.
