The West’s Imperial Panic on Full Display in Munich

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s speech at the Munich Security Conference on February 15, 2026, made the headlines for the wrong reasons. It exposed the desperation of the declining Western Empire and signalled cause for concern for the Global South, particularly Africa.
In his effort to unite European allies around a singular cultural identity, he openly acknowledged colonialism was the engine that powered Western civilization. He suggested that rejecting multiculturalism was essential for Europe to maintain its place in future U.S. alignment. According to him, being ashamed of its imperial past would only weaken Europe.
But not only does this establish that Western civilization is powerful only through imperialism, it also exposes the West’s stark hypocrisy of seeking to nationalize every aspect of its domestic space while simultaneously advancing imperial ambitions abroad.
