Door is a bore (DIAB) for dogs with separation issues

Aim: 10 successful repetitions before moving on to the next step.

Step 1: Walk to door, but stop 6 ft short, return.
Step 2: Walk to door, but stop 3 ft short, return.
Step 3: Walk to door, touch door, return.
Step 4: Walk to door, turn/depress handle, return.
Step 5: Walk to door, touch lock, return.
Step 6: Walk to door, turn lock/key, return.
Step 7: Walk to door, open and close door, return.
Step 8: Walk to door, open and step outside (keep door open), step back, close door, return.
Step 9: Walk to door, open and step outside, close door, open door, step back, close door, return.
Step 10: Walk to door, open and step outside, close door, count to 1, open door and step back in, close door, return.

Repeat step 10 with count to 2, then, 3, then, 4, then 5. From there you can start building more duration or you can continue to use the DIAB steps as warm ups for departure training.

Push to next step only if your dog shows no signs of distress.
Drop to previous step if your dog shows signs of distress.

Each time you do a session begin with an easy step for warming up.
