The Old Way- Brant Buckley
Here is my website: http://brantbuckley.com
This video was shot at the Herrick County forest preserve in Illinois in the prairie area. I had the pleasure to get to know blues musician Jesse Graves a few years ago while living in Philadelphia and he passed on blues and the Old Way. This song is about him. He learned from Son House and Muddy Waters. I would recommend listening to his version of Dust My Broom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9vhWQweCus
Lyrics:
Verse 1
He left town on a greyhound
This holy man new of sacred land
He was mystical all in three
Man, woman, child, he was and Indian Chief
He changed shapes in front of my eyes
He knew God was in the black hills
His people’s chains formed clouds of rain
Thunderbird ate their pain
Chorus
It’s in the Whiteman who thinks he owns the land
He’s mistaken misleading nation
It’s from the old days our Lakota ways
This he showed me and he told me
Live the old way you gotta break away
Live with nature you can’t hate her
Verse 2
For two days and one night
He had visions he saw the light
An eagle’s talon through his veins
The beating drums were in his brain
He gained power and became a man
Chorus- repeat
Bridge-End
Sun Dance enter trance Wakan Tanka
Hawk cries eagle eyes Wakan Tanka
Black bones, burial stones, silence in the land
