As of October 2019, there were 48 active aircraft carriers in the world operated by the navies of 13 different countries. The United States Navy holds 24 of those aircraft carriers, with 11 being nuclear-powered. These nuclear carriers remain the largest in the world with a total combined deck space over twice that of all the other nations with carriers combined. These ships, although important for American military prowess, have been noted to be cumbersome to operate as military watercraft, and are hugely expensive to build and maintain. For these reasons, the United States Air Force explored the seemingly far-fetched possibility of creating a new type of carrier during the 1970s… an airborne 747 aircraft carrier capable of delivering fighter jets from mid-air anywhere in the world...
