The first Crimean Khan, Hacı Geray, performed the Hajj even before he became ruler.
In 1783 everything changed.
That was when Russia first annexed Crimea.
It destroyed the Crimean Tatar state.
And tried to eradicate Islam.
Imams were arrested and killed.
Mosques were destroyed.
Believers were forbidden from making the pilgrimage to Mecca.
Russia resumed its persecution of Muslims during the second annexation of Crimea in 2014.
