In celebration of both Hatsune Miku's 10-Year Anniversary as well as Miku Day [3/9 -- NOTE: 39 can be pronounced as MIKU in Japanese], four fan-favorite Hatsune Miku MMD models join forces to perform ヒバナ (HIBANA, lit. Spark)!

COMMENTARY:

This video was made in response to a request by Ro-na (ろーな)-san. I had never heard HIBANA before Ro-na's request, but after listening to it, I thought I would try my hand at making it into a VR video. Thank you Ro-na, for your suggestion!

The big challenge I faced with making this video was the four Mikus. I had to make sure they were far enough apart from each other that they weren't stepping on each others toes (or colliding into other body parts), but be close enough to each other that they had meaningful presence in the video. I also wanted to make sure that each Miku got some individual screen time, which led to some challenges with placing the camera. The thing about making a 360° video is that everyone is always SOMEWHERE in the camera's vision, which means that even if I focus on the two Mikus in the back, the other two Mikus are behind the camera (and you can swivel around to look at them if you want). Sometimes, this may cause a few unwanted model/camera collisions, but that can make for an interesting viewing experience too!

The other challenge with making these scenes is that, due to the limitations of MikuMikuDomeMaster's implementation in MMD, there are good viewing angles and bad ones, with the worst offenders happening at the 45°/135°/225°/315° positions where a seam can appear (if you're viewing straight forward, you're looking at 0°). At the 0°/90°/180°/270° (or up and down) positions, you should be able to see an excellent 3D image (if viewing the video with a VR headset). So with a bunch of Miku's all over the place, you might get a few ugly views alongside some excellent ones.
