AMD RDNA 4 Is CRAZY - ML Chiplets & Major Redesign | RDNA 3 Increases Cache & Geometry Performance
AMD's RDNA 2 architecture is highly competitive against Nvidia's Ampere based RTX 30 graphics cards, but the industry is already preparing for the upcoming battle for the next generation hardware.
AMD have a major win over Nvidia for RDNA 3 versus Lovelace, and that is AMD's usage of chiplets, which won't be used by nvidia until Hopper. RDNA 3 is significantly ahead of RDNA 2 in performance (2.5x greater) thanks to two chiplets with 80 CU each for the highest end SKU (In Navi 31), but the close to parity of Ray Tracing performance leaves Nvidia with mostly an ecosystem and DLSS advantage.
RDNA 3 according to my information improves RDNA 2 in a number of ways - but so far I have found out that there's IPC gains, improvements in caches (such as Infinity Cache), more CU thanks to chiplets, ray tracing performance and also Geometry performance too.
RDNA 3 though continues to use similar methods for upsampling and machine learning as RDNA 2. So RDNA 3 can be thought of as an architecture to help AMD transition into chiplets.
RDNA 4 though I have been told is largely a 'ground up' design, and probably using AMD's MLA chiplet patent we've seen. Though currently, I do not know the configuration of the RDNA 4 GPU. With RDNA 3 I was told two compute chiplets and one IO, so whether its similar for RDNA 4 but with an MLA chiplet (which essentially mirrors what Tensor Cores are capable of) I do not know.
RDNA 4 is also going to be critical because Nvidia's Hopper architecture is a huge step forward in terms of raw performance. I will discuss Nvidia's GPUs soon in a separate video, but Hopper will be a rather different architecture compared to both Ampere and Lovelace.
