Abandoned Segregation Asylum - Horrible Things Happened Here

I trekked through the woods with Exploring With Josh, RnK All Day, and Chris Hall to explore an abandoned insane asylum. It was established in 1888 as a training school for the Feeble-Minded and finally closed on June 30, 2009. During its time of operation, the asylum allowed only white children between the ages of 7 and 17 to be admitted. In the 1950's the staff were forced by the state to admit some African-American patients, but they ended up putting them all in the retarded wing of the building and mistreated them very badly. There were also many reports of rich white families adopting white girls from the asylum to take home and make them their "maid" so to speak. On Sunday, March 8, 2009, one of the vacant buildings was destroyed by a fire. The building had previously been approved for demolition, so firefighters allowed the building to burn rather than attempt to put it out. The Fire Marshal investigated the fire as possible arson. A few months later, the asylum would be closed and abandoned for good.
