Wim Crouwel on timeless design

Born in 1928 in Groningen, Netherlands, Wim Crouwel was never interested in decoration. He was obsessed with structure. The Grid became his foundation.

In 1963, he co-founded Total Design, a studio that brought modernist order to post-war Europe designing for clients like the Dutch Post Office and the Stedelijk Museum.

He designed to be functional, but when faced with a choice between perfect readability and aesthetics, he often chose aesthetics.

He believed design should evolve, just like time itself.
For Crouwel, style wasn’t static it was the evidence of growth.
