Protecting Grassroots Ideas: IP in Sports & Local Economic Impact | Sebokeng Roadshow

Grassroots innovators often mistake Intellectual Property (IP) as a strictly high-tech concept, overlooking its vital presence in everyday sectors like sports apparel and fitness applications.

When creators share their unprotected ideas prematurely, they risk having their innovations stolen by potential partners, completely cutting them out of the commercialisation process.

To combat this, the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation hosted a community roadshow in Sebokeng to educate local talent on the vital importance of Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs). We guided creators on how to safeguard their ideas before public disclosure. Additionally, we ensured this event directly benefited the region by intentionally sourcing all services, including catering and programme directors, from local Sebokeng entrepreneurs.
