Meinberg's PTP Grandmasters in Broadcast Environments - Case Study on PTP Automode functionality
A short introduction of two Meinberg PTP Grandmasters for Broadcast environments, where PTP is an essential part of the SMPTE ST 2110.
PTP Automode demonstration
The SMPTE ST 2022-7 architecture provides a fully redundant network setup, where a fault in your network can happen without causing noticable issues. However, there have been cases where the PTP synchronization could end up in two seperate synchronization islands depending on the type of the network fault. Under certain circumstances it can happen that a group of endnodes synchronize to PTP grandmaster A and the rest of the nodes synchronize to PTP grandmaster B. In a case where the grandmasters are free-running due to a GPS reception failure the two groups will drift apart over time.
Meinberg's PTP Auto Mode solves this problem. No matter which type of failure occurs, a dedicated PTP crosslink between the redundant master clocks will ensure that all master systems are in phase, even in free-running mode. The PTP Auto Mode technology makes it possible that all systems move together towards the same direction to ensure a working operation within a studio.
