Minimally Invasive Tubular Retraction (MITR)
𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐮𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐌𝐈𝐓𝐑)
A surgical technique in spine surgery that involves progressive dilation of the soft tissues via tubes, as opposed to cutting directly through the muscles. By using tubes to keep the muscles out of the way, the surgeon works through a really small incision without having to expose the area widely. Sometimes, the surgeon will also utilize a microscope to perform the surgery so that visualization of tiny structures can be seen (see pic). Once the procedure is complete, the tubular retractor can be removed, allowing the dilated tissues to come back together.

When compared to the more traditional open surgery done with really long incisions, minimally invasive spine surgery approaches can be faster, safer, and require less recovery time. Many times, the surgery can be done using incisions several millimeters or less.
Because of the reduced damage to the muscles and soft tissues during surgery, surgeries performed with MIS techniques can:
✅ Have better cosmetic results because the incisions are smaller
✅ Less scar tissue
✅ Less blood loss
✅ Less time under anesthesia
✅ Reduced risk of muscle damage (since no cutting of the muscle is done and instead the muscle is moved to the side).
✅ Faster recovery
