Triads are a truly invaluable tool to have under your belt as a guitar player. They are incredibly useful for both rhythm and lead playing, but once you’ve learned the theory behind them and multiple inversions for each triad type (major, minor, dominant 7th, augmented, diminished) how do you take triads a step further?

In today’s video I’m going to be discussing a concept known as spread voice triads, or ‘spread triads’. Spread voice triads do not adhere to the use of the four string sets that most guitar players learn their triad inversions on. The three notes span over four strings with the bass note of the inversion landing on either the low E, A or D string.

The highest note in a spread voice triad is an octave higher than the lowest two notes, which gives them a wide intervallic range from low to high. The wider range in pitch - compared to regular triads which contain three notes from the same octave - gives them a unique sound.

In addition to the wider range in pitch, another key difference between spread voice and regular triads, is the order of the chord tones from low to high.

Your typical root position major triad has the root note in the bass, the 3rd in the middle and the 5th on top. The spread voice version has those top two chord tones reversed, resulting in the root in the bass, 5th in the middle and the 3rd on top.

The same rules apply to 1st and 2nd inversion triads - when you’re playing spread voice triads the top two chord tones are reversed. For example, a normal 1st inversion major triad from low to high would be 35R, and the spread voice version would be 3R5.

Another interesting facet of spread voice triads is that for each inversion, you have two different ways of playing them. This is demonstrated in the video, but essentially this means that you’ve got two different fingerings you can experiment with for each inversion.
