"Don't Wait For The Americans, They're Gone" — How 3RAR Covered The Biggest US Retreat In Korea

In November 1950, the Chinese People's Liberation Army sent three hundred thousand soldiers across the Yalu River and broke the United States Eighth Army in six weeks. What followed became known as the Bug Out — the longest American military retreat since the Civil War. Units abandoned vehicles, weapons, and supply depots across hundreds of kilometres of Korean road. Journalists on the ground called it disorderly and shameful. The Eighth Army lost everything it had gained since September in less than two months.

Through all of it, the Third Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment held the rearguard. Three RAR had been in Korea for less than three months when the Chinese struck. They were given the assignment of covering the Eighth Army's collapse — holding river crossings and ridgelines while American units streamed south through their positions, then withdrawing in order to the next bound and doing it again. They did this continuously, in Korean winter, without losing their unit structure. Their conduct was documented in British and Australian official histories. The journalists filing from the same road mostly missed it.

This is the story of what three RAR did during the worst American military disaster of the Korean War, and why almost nobody wrote about it at the time.
