What Happens at 35 Weeks Pregnant?

What happens at 35 weeks pregnant?

The kid has passed the five pound mark and you’ve probably gained around twenty pounds. He’s around eighteen inches long if not longer, head to toe.

It seems like just yesterday he was measured head to butt.

The kid is essentially developed, with all the organs and functionality in place. He can swallow and breathe amniotic fluid, pee in it, too, though he won’t poop until after he comes out.

Now I am really not looking forward to my water breaking.

It’s all sterile in there, though the urine floating around in the amniotic fluid is why a kid with spina bifida gets spinal damage.

What can they do about that?

You would have had to take prenatal vitamins with lots of B vitamins eight months ago to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Today you need to take lots of calcium so that the kid’s cartilage turning to bone does not give you osteoporosis.

I’m still taking the prenatal vitamins.

Do not forget iron rich foods so that you can continue to make blood cells to supply the oxygen and nutrients for two.

At least the sight of meat does not make me throw up now.

Your kid is probably sucking his thumb, blinking in the darkness, taking naps periodically while waking up at sudden noises.

I’ve heard the kid can hear my voice now.

He’s been able to hear it for a while but is growing more brain cells every day to process it. But the sound of your voice is literally on top of your beating heart and digestive noises.

So the sound of my voice is mediated by the sound of passing gas and breathing.

At least the kid does not know to be embarrassed by any of it. The kid is so big now, though, that it is hard for you to avoid feeling things like when he has the hiccups.

What else is going on?

While only a minority of kids show up more than two weeks before their due date, women around this time start having Braxton Hicks contractions so strong they think they are in real labor.

That’s a practice for the real thing.

The real contractions will occur in set intervals that get closer together as the contractions get stronger.

The countdown to arrival. It feels like I've been doing that for weeks already, but I do not know what to do about it.

The only thing worse than being in labor is trying to sort out insurance paperwork while in labor. Make sure you’re pre-admitted to the hospital with all the forms in place now, so you do not have to level up the stress at the worst time.
