For 2021, Rolex continues the trend of adding to their already existing models rather than releasing a brand-new watch. While this practice isn’t new, in fact, Rolex hardly ever releases new models, it’s still exciting to see what tweaks and upgrades the Big Crown will make to their existing catalog. Whether it be integrating their latest movement or perhaps a change in case size, no modification, even the most minute, goes unnoticed by avid collectors.

We’ll start with, perhaps, the most exciting release this year, the new Explorer watches. The beloved mountaineer’s watch has been a staple of the Rolex catalog for decades, featuring a design set that has remained largely the same since the 1950s. Until now, the series has only ever been produced in stainless steel.

With the release of reference 124273, the Explorer is now available in steel and yellow gold. The notoriously rugged tool watch now takes on a versatile and slightly more luxurious aesthetic that many collectors were not expecting.

Also new to the collection is the return of the smaller 36mm case, down from 39mm. The collection had remained 36mm for decades until 2010 when Rolex experimented with a larger case size. However, this year, it seems as though the brand has chosen to return the Explorer to its 36mm roots.

Keen-eyed collectors will also notice that the Explorer logo has moved from the 6 o’clock position back to 12 o’clock. Lastly, Rolex has integrated the newer-caliber 3230 Perpetual movement into the series, which now features a longer 70-hour power reserve and a more efficient Chronergy escapement.

The Yellow Rolesor ref. 124273 wasn’t the only Explorer released this year. The company also unveiled an Oystersteel edition via ref. 124270, replacing the 39mm ref. 214270. Like the steel and gold edition, ref. 124270 is also 36mm in diameter and relies on the calibre 3230 movement.

Also included in the 2021 Explorer lineup is a new Explorer II via ref. 226570. It replaces ref. 216570, keeping many design aspects while including a few minor upgrades and integrating to the calibre 3285.

Starting with the case, reference 226570 remains 42mm in diameter. Only now, the lugs are slimmed down for a slightly more refined look. Many speculated that the bezel might be presented in ceramic. However, that wasn’t the case as ref. 226570 keeps the same signature all-steel design with black engraved graduations.

Another minor change worth mentioning is the return of the matte black hands and hour markers on the white dial edition. As some might recall, its predecessor ref. 216570 features glossier black surrounds and Mercedes hands.

Also new for 2021 is the meteorite dial Daytona, offered in white gold (ref. 116519LN), yellow gold (ref. 116508), and Everose (ref. 116505). The use of meteorite isn’t new to the Rolex catalog. However, it’s an exciting addition to the Daytona series because the material is scarce and literally out-of-this-world.

The Daytona isn’t the only model to receive a new selection of dial options. Rolex also unveiled a brand-new collection of striking Datejust 36 dials in either a palm or fluted motif. These dials are exclusive to Rolex and are unlike anything else on the market today and utilize materials such as copper, titanium, and silicon to create vibrant and eye-catching hues.

The GMT Master II ref. 126710, which was previously only produced on the Jubilee bracelet, is now offered on the Oyster bracelet as well. The reference number has not changed. Furthermore, this upgrade applies to both the Pepsi and Batman bezel editions.

The Sky-Dweller series also received a new bracelet option, with the Yellow and White Rolesor editions now offering either the Oyster or Jubilee bracelet. For now, the Jubilee bracelet is only available on the steel and gold references.
