Pit and fissure sealants - Lapointe dental centres
Pit and fissure sealants (PFS) consist of an organic polymer that adheres to the surface of the enamel. The technique is several decades old. The goal of this treatment is a preventive measure aiming to protect the grooves in the enamel. If you look at the top part of a tooth, several grooves can be seen. Plaque, which is the cause of decay, can adhere to these. Those locations are difficult to clean. Here is a good example of a spot where sealant should be recommended. First, the surfaces to be coated should be thoroughly cleaned. To create an adhesive surface, we apply phosphoric or nitric acid in the form of a gel or liquid; a microscopic unevenness will result. This is then rinsed abundantly and dried completely before applying the sealant. Once the sealant is applied, it is hardened with a lamp especially designed for this purpose. The sealant is now hard and the job is complete. A sealing that is well applied and well maintained can last many years.
