Unique Jerusalem school healing Jewish-Arab divisions wins World’s Best School Prize
The Max Rayne Hand in Hand Jerusalem School, the only bilingual integrated Jewish-Arab primary and secondary school in the country, was chosen as the winner of the World’s Best School Prize for Overcoming Adversity 2023, one of five global school prizes established by T4 Education.
The school focuses on fully integrated learning between Arab and Jewish children. In Israel, 99 per cent of Jewish and Arab children study separately, and the school aims to break down barriers between the communities.
Efrat Meyer, the High School Principal, said: “The fact that Jews and Arabs never meet each other from a very young age brings a lot of opportunity for racism. And this is something that we do differently in the school.”
The school was established in 1998 by parents who did not support the separate education of Jewish and Arab children within Israel.
Teaching and leadership roles are taken up by both Jews and Arabs, and the pupils have two teachers in the classroom, one supporting their mother tongue in either Arabic or Hebrew, and the other enabling them to learn the other language.
