The Pistol Shrimp — Deadliest Punch in the Ocean

The ocean's most powerful weapon fits in the palm of your hand.

The pistol shrimp is barely 5 centimetres long. But its snapping claw moves at 100 kilometres per hour — creating a cavitation bubble that reaches 8,000 degrees Fahrenheit. For a fraction of a second, that's hotter than the surface of the sun.

The shockwave it produces stuns and kills prey instantly. No venom. No teeth. Just physics.

And it produces a flash of visible light through a process called sonoluminescence — making the pistol shrimp the only animal on Earth that creates light from sound.

The Royal Navy has reportedly had sonar disrupted by colonies of these creatures. An entire naval fleet confused by a shrimp.
