Can Muslim Men Beat their Wives? - Abdur Raheem Green
Support us on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/DigitalMimbar This is one of the most common Quranic passages that is misunderstood and misused by both Muslims and non-Muslims. It is verse 34 of Surah an-Nisa. The English translation of this verse reads as follows:
"Men are (meant to be righteous and kind) guardians of women because God has favoured some more than others and because they (i.e. men) spend out of their wealth. (In their turn) righteous women are (meant to be) devoted and to guard what God has (willed to be) guarded even though out of sight (of the husband). As for those (women) on whose part you fear ill-will and nasty conduct, admonish them (first), (next) separate them in beds (and last) "beat them". But if they obey you, then seek nothing against them. Behold, God is most high and great. (4:34)
Thus, if a woman rebels against the teachings of Islam, then he should follow this method of admonishing her, forsaking her in bed and hitting her. But that doesn't mean he has got permission to beat her black and blue! Islam has explained what is meant here. Please watch this video for a clarification.
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The best of you is the one who is best towards his wife, and I am the best of you towards my wives." (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3895; Ibn Maajah, 1977; classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami, 3314)

ABOUT THE SPEAKER -
Abdur Raheem Green was born in Dar-es-salaam in Tanzania. His father was a colonial administrator in the then extant British Empire. By the time he was walking the old colonies were getting their independence, and his family moved back to the UK. He was sent to a Roman Catholic Monastic boarding school, Gilling Castle and then onto Ampleforth College. It was there that he really started to question what life was all about and how much sense the traditions he was being brought up with really made.
It was while he was working in the City (London) that his delving into every aspect of spirituality, philosophy and psychology came to a head. It was then when he picked up a copy of the Quran and upon reading it he was convinced that it was revelation from God, and thus started his journey into Islam. This was in 1987. Since that time he has been involved in letting others know about Islam.
He is well known for his efforts at the renowned "Speaker's Corner" in London's Hyde Park. Currently, he is engaged in different activities including media work (Peace TV and Islam Channel)
