HOW NORMAN BATES BECAME THE ROLE ANTHONY PERKINS COULD NEVER ESCAPE.
Anthony Perkins was born April 4, 1932, in Manhattan. His father — actor Osgood Perkins — died of a heart attack when Anthony was five years old. He was raised almost entirely by his mother, Janet, to whom he grew obsessively close. He later described her behavior toward him as erotic. He said he loved his father but also wanted him dead so he could have his mother to himself. When his father died, the wish came true — and the guilt never left. Norman Bates was not an accident.
He made his film debut in 1953. Three years later an Oscar nomination for Friendly Persuasion. Then Psycho in 1960. Alfred Hitchcock. One of the most iconic horror performances in cinema history. And then — a trap. The role followed him everywhere. He relocated to Europe, won at Cannes, worked with Orson Welles. But in America, he was always Norman Bates.
For decades Perkins hid his homosexuality. Sophia Loren pursued him. Brigitte Bardot invited him to her penthouse in Paris. Jane Fonda showed interest. He rejected them all — and the rejections cost him. At 39 he underwent conversion therapy with psychologist Mildred Newman. At 40 he married photographer Berry Berenson. They had two sons: Osgood and Elvis.
In 1990, while being treated for facial palsy, Perkins gave a blood sample. The National Enquirer illegally obtained it and had it tested. The headline read: "Psycho Star Has AIDS Virus." That was how he found out he was HIV-positive.
He kept the diagnosis secret for two years. Only his wife knew. He kept working. Before his death he wrote a final statement: "I have learned more about love, selflessness and human understanding from the people I have met in this adventure in the world of AIDS than I ever did in the cutthroat world in which I spent my life."
He died September 12, 1992. He was 60.
Nine years later, on September 11, 2001, his wife Berry Berenson boarded American Airlines Flight 11. She did not survive.
