The victim, a Texas police officer, testified that she and the defendant had been in a relationship for nearly two years and had lived together. On April 16, 2023, an argument began when the defendant demanded that she bring him a can of snuff. When she initially refused, he became angry, damaged her patrol car, and blocked her driveway. She stated that he confronted her with a gun, forced her inside the residence, held a knife to her neck causing injury, choked her multiple times, punched her, and bit her. Photographs of her injuries were submitted as evidence, and she confirmed she required hospital treatment.

She further testified that this was not the first instance of violence. Prior incidents allegedly involved physical abuse, threats with a knife, property damage, and threatening text messages stating he would kill her. Despite a five-year protective order, she claimed he continued contacting her from jail through letters and emails, violating court orders.

The victim’s ex-husband, Michael Engel, also testified that the defendant had threatened him and their nine-year-old son. A recorded phone call from 2021 was mentioned, though the defense objected because it had not been previously disclosed in discovery.

Throughout the hearing, Judge Raquel West had to consider whether reducing the bond would pose a danger to the victim and her family. Both witnesses expressed serious fear for their safety if the defendant were released.
