How to Stop Bait Robbers | Fishing Florida

Today we're going to talk about fishing with birds and how to avoid these sneaky "bait robbers" getting caught up in your line and hooks! It's a seemingly simple concept, and yet harder to practice than preach. Florida is full of birds! We have osprey swoop down to steal fish from our line, cormorants stealing our bait underwater, and shorebirds heading straight for our bait buckets the second our heads are turned. There are so many scenarios where the birds and the fish are in the exact same area - because birds eat fish here in Florida! In fact, if you follow the birds...you'll probably find fish. And they know if they follow you...you probably have fish too. It's important to avoid bait robbers as much as possible and to avoid feeding them. Not only does it encourage disease and parasites within the varying species of birds, but it also makes them dependant upon humans for food which can make them weak in nature. That being said, there are many ways to avoid getting tangled up in the birds and the top solution is to COVER YOUR BAIT. That's right. A simple bucket lid (Purchase here: https://amzn.to/2SMG982 ), pocket, or even a sand pale can put the bait out of sight and that's your biggest defense. Some birds have become wise to our attempts and will still hunt the bait out based on smell (in which case you may find a mess under your cover). But it's more likely to happen if you leave your bait out and available. By covering your bait not only do you save birds from the risks of getting tangled up in the fishing line, hooks, etc...but you save bait (which is expensive in dollars and time). We teach a lot of fishing lessons and run kayak fishing charters regularly so we can attest to these strategies. The birds may come close, but they generally won't come close enough to touch. And even if you can touch them- we don't recommend it. In the instance that you do get caught up with a bird (or find a bird that's been wrapped up in garbage) then we recommend throwing a shirt, towel, or whatever you have with you over their head. This will reduce their ability to see which will calm them immediately. This can be a tricky feat in the wild especially if you don't have them attached to your line as we do in this video. But if they are wrapped up they'll generally move slower than usual. Once you have caught them simply do your best to unwrap the line, un-hook a hook if they have one, or detach whatever garbage is attached. This will help them immediately by freeing their wings and feet (and we are pretty sure it will increase your good fishing karma as well)! We sure do enjoy all the beautiful birds we get to share the waters with here in Florida and hope this inspires you to take care in how you treat them too. Good luck out there and we'll look forward to seeing you on the water!
