Komal, Shuddha, Tivra — three words that define how notes behave in classical music.

Five notes can be altered: Re, Ga, Dha, and Ni can be flattened (Komal), and Ma can be raised (Tivra). The remaining two — Sa and Pa — are Achal Swar: they never change.

This system produces 12 note positions in an octave, which is how the 10 Thaats generate such a wide variety of Raags from the same seven base notes.

Understanding Komal and Tivra is essential for reading Aaroh/Avroh notation and for recognising the character of any Raag. If you see “Komal Ga” in a Raag’s description, now you know exactly what that means.
