"Smiling Skies" 1928 voc: unknown (unissued test)
I have a strong feeling the fine trumpet work featured on these sides is by a 19-year-old Frank Zinzer. He was a protege of Bix and was subbing for him at the age of 15. Most of Zinzer's commercial recordings were done with the Max Fisher Orch and Gus Arnheim, and you can see photos of him in the band on my other Max Fisher YT posts. Frank could imitate Bix with the most subtle of phrasing and technique. He was a brilliant chameleon adapting to any style required. He was hired as first trumpet at Paramount Pictures in 1932 and was there until the early 50s. You can hear his hot trumpet on "What a Perfect Combination" in The Kid From Spain for Sam Goldwyn, UA (Alfred Newman conducting). In 1928 Zinzer was recording at Columbia in Chicago with Max Fisher. It's very likely he was borrowed for this session.
