Steve Smith & Vital Information: A Prayer For The Generations – Part 4 (“Directions”)

While tracking the 2023 Vital Information albums TIME FLIES and A PRAYER FOR THE GENERATIONS, the group had just improvised three pieces of music that became Parts 1, 2, & 3 of A PRAYER FOR THE GENERATIONS. For our next piece we decided to start with the Josef Zawinul melody called “Directions,” that both Miles Davis and Weather Report played in the early days of “jazz-rock.” Once Manuel Valera and I got rolling, Janek Gwizdala entered and George Garzone jumped in, all contributing to the development of this free-flowing, up-tempo, energetic piece. - Steve Smith
