The Ruy Lopez is an incredibly popular opening at all levels of chess, from the amateur player up to top level grandmasters. It is considered as one of the best openings for white after the moves 1.e4 e5.

In the fourth video of the series, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy is sharing with you the Berlin Defense, also known as the Berlin Wall, in the Ruy Lopez. The main focus of this video is to show you the main strategies and plans for both sides in the different variations.

The Ruy Lopez opening is characterized by the following move order:

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5

After black's move 3...Nf6, we reach the Berlin System. White can continue with 4.d3, which leads to the so-called Anti-Berlin System. The second option is playing is short-side castling with 4.0-0. After castling, black can either play 4...Bc5 (Berlin Classical Variation) or 4...Nxe4 (Berlin Main Variation). In this video, we will cover the Berlin main variation with 4...Nxe4.
