Rita Coburn on W.E.B. Du Bois, Racism, and Black Identity in 2026

“What might some of our greatest Black scholars and artists have done in their lives if they did not have to dedicate so much of their lives to the fight against racism?”

In this powerful conversation and cultural commentary, award-winning filmmaker Rita Coburn discusses her upcoming documentary, W.E.B. Du Bois: Rebel with a Cause, and why the ideas of W. E. B. Du Bois still resonate in America today.

From Du Bois’ concept of “twoness” in The Souls of Black Folk to the ongoing realities facing Black Americans in 2026, this interview explores race, identity, Black intellectualism, grief, legacy, and the emotional cost of survival in America.

The film features commentary and narration from voices including Viola Davis and Henry Louis Gates Jr., while refusing to reduce Du Bois into a flawless historical icon. Instead, it presents him as deeply human — brilliant, conflicted, evolving, and relentlessly committed to Black liberation.

This video is both a review and reflection on:
• W.E.B. Du Bois’ lasting relevance
• Black identity and “double consciousness”
• Structural racism and lost potential
• Black grief, survival, and legacy
• The importance of documenting Black history truthfully

Featuring reflections on figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Medgar Evers, Fred Hampton, Booker T. Washington, and Marcus Garvey.
