CRISPR System Offers New Strategy to Combat Antibiotic Resistance

UCSD researchers just revealed a CRISPR breakthrough that can actively reverse antibiotic resistance in bacteria — fast. Their next-gen Pro-Active Genetics system, pPro-MobV, uses conjugal transfer (bacterial “mating”) plus CRISPR to spread resistance-disabling cassettes through populations and biofilms, achieving up to a 5-log reduction. Delivered via conjugation and potentially engineered bacteriophages, with homology-based deletion safeguards, this approach could restore antibiotic effectiveness and curb environmental sources of superbugs. Published in npj Antimicrobials and Resistance (Feb 2, 2026). Like & share if this shocked you — science might be turning the tide on superbugs. #CRISPR #AntibioticResistance #UCSD #pProMobV #GeneDrive #Biofilms
