The United States is bypassing a frosty diplomatic relationship with South Africa to secure its high-tech future. Despite escalating tensions over Pretoria’s domestic and foreign policies, the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) is moving forward with a $50 million investment in the Phalaborwa Rare Earths Project. Located in South Africa’s Limpopo province, this 'experimental' project aims to extract critical minerals like neodymium and praseodymium, essential for EVs, smartphones, and fighter jets, not from a traditional mine, but from massive piles of industrial waste known as phosphogypsum. As China currently controls nearly 90% of global rare earth refining, Washington is racing to build a 'China-free' supply chain.
