We camped at the 7th Fall | ඇලි හත උඩ රැයක් - 7 Falls (Eli Hatha) Maliboda, Deraniyagala Sri Lanka

7 Falls, commonly called Ali Hatha is situated in Deraniyagala side of Sri Paada Adaviya.
There are 7 main waterfalls in the 6-hour hike. We camped & stayed the night at the 7th waterfall.

We can reach up to 1st fall on a vehicle, through Maliboda small town. Last few kilometers of the road is hard, a 4WD with enough ground clearance is preferred. ( we went on a lorry ).

Sadly the 1st to 3rd falls are not that attractive in the dry season because of a controversial hydropower station. They've blocked the stream at the 3rd fall using a dam & taking water down through a giant metal pipe.

Surprisingly this privately owned powerplant has been constructed inside the forest reserve which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That should be illegal. There were rumors of further expansion as well to increase the capacity. Villagers have protested it a lot. There is a pending court case also.

On the other hand, many infrastructure & jobs have been developed in this very rural area as a result of these power plants, so people normally prefer money over the jungle :(
