Bait and Switch: Selling Therapy as Fast Food... or Coaching
Therapists and coaches try to do each other's job. That's because psychotherapy is hard to sell, even though it's actually what many people need. Therapy companies like BetterHelp, and some individual therapists, don't attempt to sell real psychotherapy to the public. Instead they advertise something closer to coaching, or in the extreme, fast food. They sell ease and convenience over depth.
Bait-and-switch advertising is bad enough (if the ads don't match the actual service). But it's even worse when some therapists actually practice like coaches, simply because coaching is easier to "sell." It's a disservice to their clients.
Meanwhile, many clients choose coaches when they really need therapists. That's one reason coaches end up providing some psychotherapy when they're not licensed to (and shouldn't). Many folks who need therapy won't see a real therapist, as that would mean there's something to work on in themselves.
Dr. Reidbord is a practicing psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and psychiatric educator with eons of experience. 🦕 "More Than Meds" debunks oversimplified or misleading messages about therapy and psychiatry, and explains complex mental health concepts in accessible ways.
