Understanding Aquifers : Conducting a pump test on an open-well

Jayesh and Imran from ACWADAM (Advanced Center for water resources development and management) explain the "pump test" that is conducted on openwells and what we can learn from it. Wells and the way they behave is our best window into how groundwater resides and flows in "aquifers" beneath our feet. Understanding Aquifers - how much water they can hold, how quickly it moves, and what withdrawal they can sustain - is critical to managing them. If you have an open well in your house, and it has water - you can do this test too (without the sophisticated instruments). As you pump the water out, keep track of how much water is pumped out per minute and in total and note down how much the level of the water in the well has fallen at regular intervals. Once you've stopped pumping, note down how the water level rises back again at regular intervals. Share this data and your well's story with the city on www.groundwaters.in or on the Facebook group "Bangalore Groundwater mapping".
