Stoat V Rat - Who Will Win? | Wildlife Moments | Fight Night

Who will win? See what happens when this stoat tries to take down a rat.

I was incredibly lucky to have a close sighting of a stoat predating a rat whilst visiting Rutland Water. Most of my sightings of stoats are fleeting glimpses as they dash across the road, but to see one at such close quarters, catching a rat, was very lucky!

The action began around the bird feeding station, moving out onto the road surrounded by local Birdwatchers.

The easiest and most reliable way to tell a stoat (Mustela erminea) from a weasel (Mustela nivalis) is the tail. A stoat’s tail is around half the length of its body and ends in a bushy black tip. A weasel’s tail is short and stubby by comparison and solely brown in colour.

Filmed in the wild at Rutland Water in February 2011.
