Nitrogen Cycle: Nitrogen Fixation, Nitrification, Assimilation, Ammonification, and Denitrification
Nitrogen Cycle is the process by which the nitrogen is converted into nitrogen compounds through the atmosphere, soil, and organisms
Five processes of the nitrogen cycle
1. Nitrogen Fixation (atmosphere) is the process of converting nitrogen gas (N2) into nitrates (NO3-) through lightning.
Nitrogen Fixation (soil) is the process of converting nitrogen gas (N2) into ammonia (NH3) by the bacteria living in the roots of legumes.
2. Nitrification is the process of converting ammonia (NH3) into nitrates (NO3-) by the nitrifying bacteria.
3. Assimilation is the process by which nitrogen compounds such as ammonia and nitrates are obtained by plants and animals.
4. Ammonification is the process of converting dead organic matter and animal wastes into ammonia (NH3) through the action of bacteria and fungi.
5. Denitrification is the process of converting nitrates into nitrogen gas by denitrifying bacteria.
