Comparing Two Rapid Fluid Volume Infusers
In reality, for the pediatric patient with smaller catheters, there really aren't many tool options for rapid infusion of fluids and blood. IV pumps will deliver a liter in one hour if set at 999. Pressure bags are a consideration or more commonly fluids are manually syringed when rapid fluid or blood infusion is needed.
In this video rapid infusion with a standard pressure bag or the LifeFlow Rapid Infuser is tested with 14 gauge and 22 gauge catheters in two different "patients". The differences were dramatic. In this comparison we learned some important information about these two tools for the rapid infusion of fluid in pediatric patients.
1. Pressure bags need consistent attention to maintain the pressure at 300 mmHg.
2. For smaller catheters the LifeFlow device doesn't work any better or faster by forcefully squeezing the handle. In fact, it is actually counterproductive and increases work unnecessarily. The LifeFlow mantra for smaller catheters is, "Go Slow for Better Flow".
