Historic Island Link to and from Washington Island | Door County Unearthed

Through the 1950's, there were small motorized vessels with sails that brought freight back and forth including: fish, farming products, lumber products to ports down along the lakeshore for the farming and fishing communities. When automobiles came to Washington Island in 1914-1915 and some of the early freighter vessels carried one or two of the smaller automobiles at that time. William Jepson developed a wooden vessel specifically to include more automobiles, up to 4 or 5 at a time (as well as freight and passengers). That evolved into a slightly larger wooden vessel in the 1930's, which was then purchased by Carl and Arni Richter in 1940. From then on, it has been known as the Washington Island Ferry Line. They operated two wooden vessels until the war ended in WW2, and then built a steel hauled vessel (one that could actually break ice) which extended the season further and operate in winter. The Voyager was built in 1960 as an open deck vessel so it could carry larger vehicles that had higher clearance. Today they have a 100 foot Madonna that carries up to 28 vehicles.
