History and Background: "The Galway Shawl" is, like most traditional folk songs, of unknown origin. It tells a tale of lost love, of a woman in a beautiful shawl who sings "like an Irish linnet" (a linnet is a small bird, immortalized in the Wordsworth poem "The Green Linnet"). It has been recorded by dozens of Irish music artists, and remains a popular traditional song to this day.
